About DaimlerChrysler
DaimlerChrysler began in 1998 following the merger of major automotive brands Daimler-Benz and Chrysler Corporation. Daimler-Benz began in 1924 after an Agreement of Mutual Interest between Benz & Cie and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft. The two companies manufactured separate vehicles until 1926, when the two formally combined to become Daimler-Benz AG.
The Chrysler Corporation was founded in June of 1925 when the Maxwell Motor Company was re-shuffled into the Chrysler Corporation. In 1928, the company began dividing its vehicles by their class and function. Chrysler developed the Plymouth brand for their affordable vehicles and the DeSoto brand for average-priced alternatives. Both Daimler-Benz and Chrysler saw great success and consistent growth throughout the 20th century. The companies came together in 1998 to help ensure the long-term growth and sustainability of both brands. Today, the company is known simply as Daimler, after the divestment of Chrysler to Cerberus Capital Management.
