About Sony

Sony is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation based in Tokyo, Japan. Sony is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of consumer and professional electronics and video game consoles, as well as one of the largest video game and record publishing companies.

The company’s history begins In 1946, when Japanese entrepreneur Masaru Ibuka opened an electronic shop in a Tokyo department store alongside Akio Morita. This store, Tōkyō Tsūshin Kōgyō, developed Japan’s first tape recorder, called the Type-G. In 1958, the company renamed themselves Sony and established Sony Corporation of America only two years later due to a steadily growing market for microelectronics in America. Their international success was largely due to their reputation for providing great production quality, garnering loyal customers across the globe from the 1960’s to 1980’s.

In 1971, Ibuka stepped down as president during the global recession. Ibuka’s successor, Norio Ohga, successfully brought the company out of the recession when they entered a partnership with Philips to develop the compact disc, as well as when they entered the video game market in the 1990’s. Continuing this expansion, Sony ventured into various media industries and consumer electronics, especially as the movie industry became increasingly expansive. When Kazuo Hirai became the company’s president, Sony’s electronic focuses were honed to imaging, gaming, and mobile technology, cutting off much of their losses from the television business at the time. Today, Sony continues to develop their television, film, and gaming sectors with new products and services.
